Yippees: Late 1960s and early 1970s anti-Vietnam war protests, social and political background notes
by James K. Sayre
Yippees were few in number, but very visible, with colorful clothes and banners at peace demonstrations. The name "yippee" was invented I believe, by one Abbie Hoffman, who was a political youth leader against the Vietnam War and the establishment political support of that war. "Yippee" was a joyful shouting hippie, or at least until he got tired or bored or depressed or old. : Background sketch
