The USA ranked only 16th in the 2002 Winter Olympics medals production on a per million population basis.

To the Editor:

Our American sports media has been crowing over our winning over thirty medals in teh 2002 Winter Olympics. However, it should be noted that on a per million population basis, the USA was ranked only 16th after Norway, Estonia, Austria, Finland, Switzerland, Croatia, Sweden, Canada, Netherlands, Slovenia, Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, Czech Republic and France. Norway was clearly the most productive country, garnering Olympic medals at over forty times the rate of the USA on a population basis. Even our friendly rivals to the north, the Canadians, garnered Olympic medals at four times the rate of the USA. Perhaps a little humility is in order.
