Wild harvesting of endangered species
Some wild-growing medicinal herbs have been harvested in great quantity.
In the 18th and 19th centuries in eastern United States, the American Ginseng,
Panax quinquefolius, was harvested by the ton for export to China and other
Asian countries where there was a great demand for any and every kind of
Ginseng. Part of the problem was the over-harvesting of the Asian Ginseng,
Panax ginseng, in China and elsewhere in Asia. Over-harvesting has increased
pressure on the remaining stands of certain herbs. It is probably best not
to harvest any species of plant which is considered endangered.
End.
