To the Editor:
My original Social Security card says on the front side: "For Social Security Purposes - Not For Identification." So why are American corporations still allowed to require customers to give their Social Security numbers as a requirement for receiving services? In view of the nasty and growing problem of identity theft, this seems stupid and perverse, to say the least. Recently, I received an advertising flyer from the Dish Network, one of the major satellite television service providers and it noted that giving your Social Security number was a requirement of receiving their services. This ongoing corporate practice of requiring your Social Security number as a condition of doing business with them obviously heightens the chances of identity theft and thus should be outlawed as soon as possible (ASAP).
Very truly yours,
