The "perils" of alleged "parity" in major league baseball
by James K. Sayre
Recently, Mr. John Shea, one of the baseball writers in the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote a column which was headlined, "Perils of Parity," (The San Francisco Chronicle, July 17, 2005). Parity? What parity? What planet is this guy living on? The "parity" of the New York Yankees team payroll of $208,000,000 being over seven (7) times as large as that of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at only $29,000,000? That's parity? Excuse me, but that sounds like massive disparity. Four out of six major league baseball division leaders just happen to have the highest division team payrolls. Four out of six of the current last place teams in each division just happen to also have the lowest team payrolls. More "perils of parity?" Major league baseball needs to have a level playing field with each team having the same total team payroll. That would be parity.
Yours truly,
James K. Sayre
