Johnny Jump-ups (Viola tricolor) - Violaceae (Violet family).

This small flowering plant is variously annual, biennial or a short-lived perennial. It has oval-shaped leaves and typically only grows a few inches high. In the spring and summer, it produces small heart-shaped flowers of white, yellow and violet. Capsules filled with small brown seeds follow the flowers. Propagated by seed and by division. Several different cultivars exist and have a variety of different colored flowers Originally native to Europe and Asia. Cultivated as an ornamental in North America. Naturalized in eastern North America and in California. Traditional European folk use of flowers and leaves as the base for a medicinal tea. Note: ingestion of large quantities may produce nausea. Other names: Pansy, Wild Pansy, Love-in-idleness.
