To the Editor:
Darrell Issa can dish it out, but he can't take it.
In a front-page article in the San Francisco Chronicle (2 July 2003) entitled, "Recall chief held twice on illegal gun charges." Representative Issa said the magic words, "I don't recall." Now only if he had followed up on this thought several months ago when he decided to fund the Governor Davis recall campaign... Representative Issa said, "but I don't think 30-year old misdemeanors are fair play here." Welcome to the NFL, Representative Issa. As Harry Truman said, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." You are funding a war on the continuing Governorship of Gray Davis and as the saying goes, "all's fair in love and war."
Representative Issa asserts that "What the governor has done to California is a felony." Issa and others have been attacking Governor Gray Davis for his alleged mishandling of the recent California energy crisis. This is misdirected anger. Enron Corporation, headed by Bush buddy Kenny Boy Lay, (and incidentally, the largest campaign contributor to the Bush election campaign in 2000), and other Texas energy trading corporations stole billions of dollars from California ratepayers by gaming the partially deregulated California electricity market. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), filled with Bush appointees, sat by and did nothing while these crooks were stealing our money. Vice President Cheney said that nothing could be done. A big lie. The Texas-based El Paso Natural Gas Co., another big Bush supporter, has been convicted of rigging the price of natural gas in California by manipulating the flow of natural gas in their pipelines. This criminal activity resulted in skyrocketing prices for natural gas in California, which in turn jacked up the price for electricity, since many electrical generating power plants burn natural gas for fuel.
Governor Davis signed some long-term electricity purchasing contracts at $10 to $15 per kilowatt hour, when the spot-market price for electricity had skyrocketed up to about $800 per kilowatt hour. Governor Davis did the best that he could under exceedingly difficult circumstances. The whole energy crisis was the rigged creation by Texas electricity trading companies, who took advantage of the California electricity deregulation bill of 1996, which incidentally was passed unanimously by the California State Assembly and the California State Senate and signed into law by the Republican Governor Pete Wilson.
California residents and voters should be directing their anger about the California energy crisis at those who sat by (Bush, Cheney and FERC) and those who exploited the situation for their own private gain (Enron Corporation, other electrical trading corporations and El Paso Natural Gas Co.
Yours truly,
