FireFox 1.0 browser: rating

You may want to try the new FireFox 1.0 browser from Mozilla.org. It is based on open-source technology (any and all can join in creating new and useful technology). It is clearly superior to both Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer in terms of functionality, speed and stability. The FireFox browser is basically a stripped down and cleaned up version of the large clunky slow Netscape browsers. Firefox is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS platforms. Go to www.mozilla.org for a free download. Of course, donations are cheerfully accepted. Mozilla.org Links

There are always potentially a few downsides when you install new software on your PC. After the FireFox installation, I have found that the vaunted FireFox pop-up ad suppressor is overly functional when you visit some commercial sites. I visited the Tvland web site and the only part that showed up on the FireFox browser was the top banner; the rest of the web page was completely blank. And there at the top of the FireFox page was a little notice that proudly proclaimed that it had shore 'nough, suppressed those nasty ole pop-up ads...

Another little feature, was after the FireFox installation was completed, the Windows 98 V2 OS warned me that Mozilla/FireFox had replaced a couple of DLL files with older versions. (note: messing with Window's sacred DLL files can be yield very unpleasant results, such as having to reformat the entire hard disk) It warned that this action may affect the functioning of the PC. So far, no unseemly effects have been observed.

After using the FireFox browser for a few weeks, it has revealed a nasty habit of echoing several of your past search topics everything every time you start a new search. Very aggravating. I got so tired of it, that I went back to using Netscape. There may be a way to turn off this "feature," but I have not discovered it to date.

Give FireFox browser a "D" grade for annoying:

I have had enough of the busy-bodying and entry echoing of this FireFox browser. When you enter new search terms into a search engine window, FireFox decides that it has to echo and list every other search term that you have ever used in the same location as you are trying to enter your new search term. Is this supposed to be a feature or just another stupid annoyance? There is no obvious way to turn off this feature. So I decided to go back to using the Netscape browser. It may be a little slow and clunky and it takes forever to scroll through its bookmarks, but at least it doesn't busybody you and echo your every search term entry.
